Split The Bill is a free bill-splitting app that works out who owes what when a group shares a cost. You add a bill — by photographing the receipt or typing the total — choose how to divide it (equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, or item-by-item), and record who paid. The app does the arithmetic, tracks each person’s running balance in a single display currency, and nets everything down to the fewest payments needed to settle up. It’s the plain-English answer to the everyday question, “how do we split this bill fairly?”
How it works
- 1
Add the bill
Snap a photo of the receipt or just type the total. We read the amount, date, and merchant so you don’t retype line by line.
- 2
Choose who’s in
Add the people sharing the bill — pick from your groups, add them by name, or invite them by link. No account needed on their side to be included.
- 3
Split it your way
Divide it equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, or assign individual items to the people who ordered them. Set who actually paid — even if two people covered it.
- 4
Track who owes what
Everyone’s share is calculated instantly and kept up to date. Balances are shown in your display currency so there’s one clear number per person.
- 5
Settle up
When someone pays you back, mark it settled and the balance clears itself. Across many bills, the app nets everything down to the fewest payments needed.
Everything you need to split fairly
Snap a receipt or type it
Photograph a paper receipt and we’ll pull out the total, or enter a bill by hand in a couple of taps. No fiddly forms.
Split any way you agreed
Equal shares, exact amounts, percentages, or item-by-item — assign the wine to whoever ordered it and the maths still adds up.
The maths is always right
Shares, rounding, and running balances are calculated for you and re-checked on every change. No more napkin arithmetic or spreadsheet slips.
See who owes what
A live picture of every balance, sorted by category and shown in your own currency, so you always know who still needs to pay.
Handle tax and tip cleanly
Add tax, a service charge, or a tip once and it’s spread across the split in proportion, so nobody argues over the extra few dollars at the bottom of the receipt.
More than one person paid? (Pro)
On Pro, record split payments when two or three people chipped in on the same bill. Everyone’s contribution counts toward the total, and the balance reflects it exactly. Free bills stay single-payer.
Works in any currency
Enter each bill in the currency it was paid in — perfect for trips abroad — and see every balance converted to one display currency you choose.
Stop doing the maths in your head
Create a free account to save your bills, split them with anyone, and keep a running tally of who owes what until it’s settled.

What people split with it
Dinner with friends
A $180 table where two people shared a bottle of wine and one skipped dessert. Assign the wine and dessert to the right people, split the rest evenly, and everyone pays their real share instead of a lazy divide-by-four.
Flatmates and household bills
Rent, broadband, and the weekly grocery run split every month between three flatmates. Track who paid this month’s $95 internet bill and let the balances even out over time.
Weekend trips and holidays
A ski trip where hotels are in euros, lift passes in francs, and the supermarket run on one person’s card. Log each cost in its own currency and settle up once, at the end, in yours.
Couples sharing costs
One card pays for date nights, the other covers the groceries. Keep a running tally so at the end of the month you can see the $40 difference and square it up without a spreadsheet.
Group gifts and events
Eight colleagues chip in $25 each for a leaving present. Track who’s paid the organiser and who still owes, so nobody has to send the awkward reminder twice.
Why it beats a spreadsheet
No mental arithmetic
You never have to work out a share, a percentage, or a remainder by hand. Enter the bill and the split; the numbers are done and re-checked for you.
Fewer awkward conversations
A clear, shared record of who owes what means you point at a number instead of chasing people. Everyone sees the same balance.
Nothing gets forgotten
Bills, payments, and settle-ups are all saved, so the $12 you fronted three weeks ago is still counted when you finally square up.
Fair down to the cent
Rounding is handled so the split always adds back to the exact total — no phantom cent that leaves one person paying a fraction more.
Ready when you are
Split on the spot at the table from your phone, or add it later from the receipt in your pocket. The free plan is enough for everyday splitting.
Splitting a bill: the old way vs. the app
Most people still split bills with a calculator, a group chat, and a lot of goodwill. Here’s what changes when the app keeps the tally instead.
| Splitting a bill: the old way vs. the app | ✗ | ✓ |
|---|---|---|
| Working out each share | Divide in your head or on a phone calculator, then round and argue over the odd cent. | Enter the total and the split method — every share is calculated exactly and adds back to the total. |
| Uneven splits (items, tax, tip) | Guess, over-tip to keep it simple, or make one person cover the awkward extra. | Assign items to people and spread tax and tip proportionally, so everyone pays only for what they had. |
| Remembering who owes what | Scroll back through the group chat and hope nobody forgot a payment. | A live balance per person that stays accurate across many bills until it’s settled. |
| Settling up | Everyone pays everyone, with duplicate and missed transfers. | The app nets it down to the fewest payments needed, so you send one transfer, not five. |
| Different currencies | Look up exchange rates by hand and convert each line yourself. | Log each bill in its own currency; balances show in the one display currency you choose. |
Frequently asked questions
- How do I split a bill with this app?
- Add the bill by snapping a photo of the receipt or typing the total, choose how to split it — equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, or by assigning items to people — and set who paid. Everyone’s share is worked out for you instantly.
- Is the bill splitting app free?
- Yes. The free plan covers everyday bill splitting — adding bills, splitting them, and tracking who owes what. No card is required to get started.
- Can I split unevenly instead of just in half?
- Absolutely. As well as splitting equally you can use exact amounts, percentages, or assign individual line items to the people who ordered them, so nobody pays for something they didn’t have.
- How does it handle tax and tip?
- Add tax, a service charge, or a tip to the bill and it’s spread across the split in proportion to each person’s share. You don’t have to work out anyone’s slice of the tip by hand.
- What if more than one person paid the bill?
- On Pro, you can record a split payment where two or more people chipped in on the same bill — each contribution counts toward the total, and everyone’s balance reflects exactly what they put in and what they owe. Free bills track a single payer per bill.
- Do the people I split with need an account?
- You can split with anyone. Add people by name to track their share, or invite them so they can see the balance and settle up themselves — it’s up to you.
- How does settling up work?
- When someone pays their share, you mark it settled and the balance clears. Across several bills, the app nets everyone’s debts down to the fewest payments needed, so you send one transfer instead of many.
- Does it handle different currencies?
- Yes. Bills can be in any currency, and your totals are converted and shown in your chosen display currency so you always see one clear number for who owes what.
- Can I use it to split rent and recurring household bills?
- Yes. Add a bill each month for rent, broadband, or groceries and split it between the same people. For costs that repeat, groups keep a running balance so it all evens out over time.
