Splitwise alternative — Split The Bill

Same group-splits flow you already know, with AI-scanned receipts and pricing that doesn't paywall the basics.

Split The Bill is a free alternative to Splitwise for groups that split bills together — flatmates, travel groups, couples, anyone with a shared tab. The main difference is that scanning a receipt with your camera and splitting a bill item by item are included at no cost here, where Splitwise moved them behind its paid plan. If you already use Splitwise, import your existing group and carry the balances over, or start a new group and share the link.

Split The Bill vs Splitwise

Splitwise is the most-installed bill-splitting app in the world for good reason — clean UI, mature mobile clients, friend graph. The downside: in 2024 they aggressively paywalled features that used to be free (receipt OCR, recurring expenses, item-level splits), and the free tier now caps you at a handful of expense additions per day. Split The Bill is a web-first alternative that's closer to Tricount in spirit (lightweight, no friend graph required) but with AI receipt parsing built into the free tier.

Why people switch from Splitwise in 2026

Splitwise has been the default bill-splitting app for over a decade. It's polished, it has a huge friend graph, and most of your friends probably have an account. But starting in late 2023 the company tightened the screws on the free tier in a way that broke a lot of casual workflows.

Receipt scanning — the feature that saved most of the typing — moved behind Splitwise Pro at $40/year. Recurring expenses (the rent split that quietly auto-renews each month) moved behind Pro. Item-level splits ("I had the salad, you had the steak") moved behind Pro. Free tier got hit with a daily expense-add limit that frustrates anyone splitting a vacation week.

The pattern that emerged on Reddit and the App Store reviews: long-time users who liked the app at "$0/year, occasional ads" are now told to either pay $40 or wait until tomorrow to add another expense. People who don't want to do that are searching for "Splitwise alternative" — and that's why this page exists.

Core differences at a glance

The table above lists every feature; the short version is this. Splitwise wins on maturity — they've had ten years to polish their iOS and Android apps, build a global friend graph, and integrate with Venmo for one-tap settle-up in the US. If you want a phone-first app and most of your friends already use it, Splitwise still wins.

Split The Bill wins on the free tier. AI receipt scanning is in our free plan (Splitwise charges for it). Item-level splits are in our free plan. Multi-currency is in our free plan. Public share links — send a peer the bill without making them install anything — exist on our side and not at all on Splitwise (their share link requires the recipient to have the app).

The other big difference is web-first vs mobile-first. Splitwise has a web app, but it's mostly read-only — adding expenses there is awkward. Split The Bill is the inverse: full feature web app, no Play Store gate, no install friction for guests. If half your group is on iPhone and half is on Android and you don't want to argue about which app to install, the web app is the path of least resistance.

Who should pick Splitwise

Stay on Splitwise if any of these are true:

You and all your friends are already in their friend graph. The "find friend by email" flow on Splitwise just works because everyone has an account. Switching means re-adding contacts somewhere else, which is friction.

You're US-based and use Venmo for everything. Splitwise's deep Venmo integration ("settle up: $32 → tap → opens Venmo with prefilled amount") is genuinely smoother than what we ship today. We have settle-up deep links to Venmo / PayPal / Revolut / Cash App / Wise / SEPA QR, but Splitwise's integration in the US specifically is more polished.

You're happy paying $40/year for Pro and don't mind the friend-graph lock-in. At Pro, Splitwise gives you everything they have, including OCR and recurring. If $40 isn't a barrier and you trust them long-term, there's no urgent reason to leave.

Who should pick Split The Bill

Switch if any of these match:

You're a casual user and the free tier matters. Our free tier gives you 10 receipt-scanned bills every 30 days plus the core splitting features (item-level, multi-currency, share links). Splitwise's free tier in 2025 is a hostile sales funnel.

You're outside the US and Venmo doesn't matter to you. SEPA Instant + Revolut + PayPal cover ~95% of European peer-to-peer payments. Our SEPA QR + multi-provider deep links handle that landscape better than Splitwise's US-Venmo focus.

You want a real CSV export. For tax-deductible business splits, expense reports, or "who paid what for the trip" spreadsheet wrap-up, our deep CSV (every item, every share) wins. Splitwise CSV is Pro-only and shallower.

Your group is a mix of "have the app" and "don't want to install". Public share links work for the latter group with zero friction. Splitwise can't do this.

How to migrate from Splitwise

Quickest path: export your Splitwise group as CSV (Splitwise → group → Settings → Export as spreadsheet → CSV) and upload it at `/import/splitwise` on the app. The importer parses the export, shows you a preview of the members + expenses we read, and confirms totals match — but it does not yet write them into a group for you.

If you'd rather start fresh:

Step 1: Settle up your existing balances on Splitwise first. Whatever you owe / are owed there, close out with cash, Venmo, or whatever method you normally use. Don't carry historical balances across; just start fresh.

Step 2: Send your group a link. Either invite them by email (one-click sign-up that lands them in your group automatically) or share a public link to a bill so they can see it without an account. The public-link flow is great for "convince the skeptics" — they don't commit to anything.

Step 3: Set up recurring expenses for anything that auto-renews. Rent, utilities, Netflix — recreate them as RecurringExpense templates so they appear automatically each month with your saved split. Set it once, never type them again.

Most users who switch report it takes ~15 minutes for a single trip group, and going forward the AI receipt scan saves more time per bill than the migration cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is Split The Bill free?▾

Yes — the free tier covers 10 receipt-scanned bills every 30 days, plus the core splitting features — item-level splits, multi-currency, group invites, settle-up links, CSV export. Pro is $7/mo or $70/yr (10 months priced as 12 = 2 months free) and lifts the bill cap to unlimited.

How does Split The Bill compare to Splitwise on price?▾

Splitwise Pro is $40/year. Our Pro is $70/year — slightly more — but our free tier is genuinely usable (10 bills + the core splitting features), whereas Splitwise free is now capped at roughly 3 expense additions per day with most useful features paywalled. For most casual users, our free tier replaces what Splitwise free used to be.

Can I import my Splitwise data?▾

Partly. Export your group from Splitwise as CSV (group → Settings → Export as spreadsheet → CSV) and upload it at `/import/splitwise`. The importer reads the export, previews the members and expenses, and confirms the totals match — but it does not yet write them into a group for you. Use the preview as a verified checklist while you recreate the group, so you are working from an accurate machine-read list rather than eyeballing the old app.

Does Split The Bill work for international travel?▾

Yes — multi-currency is in the free tier. You can split a bill in EUR while one peer settles in USD, view balances in any currency, and the math reconciles correctly. SEPA QR codes work for European bank transfers; Venmo / PayPal / Revolut / Cash App / Wise deep links cover the rest.

Is there an iPhone or Android app?▾

Split The Bill is web-first — full feature web app that runs in any browser, including mobile Safari and Chrome. Native iOS / Android apps are not on the near-term roadmap because the web app already covers everything (camera access for receipt photos works, share sheet works, etc.) and skipping the App Store gate means peers don't need to install anything to view a shared bill.

What about offline / poor connection?▾

Splitwise wins on this one — their app caches everything and syncs later. Split The Bill is online-first; if you're bill-splitting on a flight or in a basement restaurant with no signal, save the receipt photo for later and process it when you're back online. Most real bill-splitting happens after the fact, so this hasn't been a frequent complaint, but it's an honest gap.

How does the AI receipt scan handle unclear receipts?▾

When the OCR can't read a line clearly, that item is flagged as uncertain and you see a "Review" badge on the bill. You can edit the line before splitting. We never run the math through the AI — only the OCR — so totals are always exact to the cent, regardless of what the model gets wrong.

Can I cancel anytime?▾

Yes. Pro is month-to-month or annual; cancel takes effect at the end of the current period and you keep Pro features until then. No lock-in, no "cancel by phone" friction. Refunds are handled per the public refund policy linked in the footer.
