Settle Up alternative — Split The Bill
Settle Up's clean group-ledger approach, plus AI receipt parsing and no premium paywall on the basics.
Last reviewed: January 2026

Settle Up is well-liked in Czech / German-speaking markets for its simple group ledger and offline-first sync. It's a solid choice if you want a phone-only app that handles trip splits without much fuss. Where Split The Bill differs: receipt OCR is in the free tier (Settle Up keeps it premium), item-level splits work inside a bill (not just whole-bill amounts), and the public share link means peers don't need to install anything.

Why people look for a Settle Up alternative
Settle Up is well-loved in Czech, German, and DACH-region markets for good reason — clean group-ledger UX, offline-first sync (rare in this category), and a reasonable freemium pricing model. If you're a phone-first user splitting trip costs with friends, Settle Up does the basics well.
The limitations show up when you try to do anything beyond whole-bill splits. Receipt OCR is Premium-only — typing every line item fast becomes a chore on a 5-night trip. Item-level splits don't exist — you split whole bills, not "I had the salad, you had the steak". The web app is sync-view-only — you can browse balances on a desktop browser but can't add expenses there, which means everyone in the group needs the mobile app installed. Exports are Premium-only too — for any group treating bill-splitting as adjacent to bookkeeping (roommate utilities, business trip reimbursements), the free tier breaks down fast.
The people most likely to look at alternatives are heavy users who hit the Premium wall on day 2 of a longer trip, and groups where one or two members refuse to install yet another mobile app.
Core differences at a glance
The table above is the precise breakdown. The narrative summary:
Both apps share the lightweight group-ledger model. Make a group, add members (no friend graph required), log expenses, settle up at the end. Same mental model, different feature surface.
Split The Bill is web-first; Settle Up is mobile-first. This is the biggest practical divergence. On Settle Up, every group member needs the iOS or Android app to participate. On Split The Bill, the app runs in any browser — and a public share link lets non-members view a bill without installing anything. For mixed groups (some people have the app, some don't want yet another one), the web-first approach removes a lot of friction.
AI receipt scan is in our free tier; Settle Up paywalls it. A 5-night trip with a few receipts each day = ~25 expenses. Either you type them all (free Settle Up) or you upgrade. We give you 10 OCR'd bills per 30 days free.
Settle-up deep links are built in. Pay through Venmo / PayPal / Revolut / Cash App / Wise / SEPA QR with one tap. Settle Up tracks balances; the actual money movement is on you.
Settle Up wins on offline sync. Their sync engine is genuinely good — works on flights, in basements, at festivals with overloaded networks. We don't have that today.
Who should pick Settle Up
Stay on Settle Up if any of these are true:
You're a heavy phone user and your whole group has the app installed. Settle Up's mobile app is mature; if everyone in your circle uses it, the web-first advantage doesn't apply.
Offline reliability is critical. Camping trips, cruise ships, remote locations — Settle Up's offline-first model handles these gracefully. We don't.
You're in the DACH region and that ecosystem matters. Settle Up has language coverage + community presence in Czech / German markets that we don't match.
You don't mind paying for Premium. Settle Up Premium is reasonably priced and unlocks OCR + exports. If those are valuable enough, paying makes sense and the comparison gets less clear.
Who should pick Split The Bill
Switch if any of these match:
Your group is mixed-platform and not everyone wants to install yet another app. The public share link is the killer feature here — peer pulls up a URL, sees the bill, no signup, no install.
You want OCR + item-level splits in the free tier. Both shipped on day one of our free plan. Settle Up paywalls OCR; doesn't do item-level at all.
You're in the EU / US / global, not specifically DACH. Our payment integrations cover Venmo (US), PayPal (global), Revolut (Europe), Cash App (US/UK), Wise (global), and SEPA QR (Europe). Settle Up's payment integration story is thinner outside their core market.
You need real CSV exports for downstream work. For business trip reimbursements, roommate-bookkeeping rollups, or year-end "where did the money go", our deep CSV (one row per item / expense / share) drops cleanly into a spreadsheet.
How to migrate from Settle Up
Settle Up's Premium tier offers CSV export of group transactions. Even without that, the migration is short:
Step 1: Close out balances on Settle Up. Use the in-app "settle" button to mark debts paid (with cash, Venmo, bank transfer — whatever you usually use), so nobody walks into Split The Bill carrying historical balances.
Step 2: Recreate active groups in Split The Bill. Roommate group, ongoing trip, family — make new groups + invite by email. Recipients get a one-click sign-up link and land in your group automatically.
Step 3: For repeating expenses, use the recurring template. Rent, internet, Netflix — the things you logged every month manually in Settle Up — become RecurringExpense templates that auto-create the bill on schedule.
Most migrations take 10-15 minutes per active group. The web-first sign-up flow means even reluctant group members have minimal friction joining.
Frequently asked questions
Is Split The Bill like Settle Up?▾
Yes in concept — group ledger, no friend graph, share to invite. Different in execution: web-first instead of mobile-first, AI receipt scan in the free tier, item-level splits within a bill, and built-in settle-up deep links to Venmo / PayPal / Revolut / Cash App / Wise / SEPA. The main thing we don't match is Settle Up's offline sync.
Does Split The Bill have an Android or iOS app?▾
No native app — it runs in any browser, including mobile Safari and Chrome. The web app uses native camera access for receipt photos, supports the OS share sheet, and works offline-readonly via standard browser caching. Settle Up wins on phone-app maturity; if that matters more than the web-first benefits, stay on Settle Up.
How does the OCR compare to typing manually?▾
For most restaurant and grocery receipts, the AI gets 95%+ of items correct on first scan. You can edit the line that's wrong before splitting. For a typical 5-day trip with one receipt per day, the time saved is ~15-20 minutes of typing — bigger than it sounds when you're trying to wind down at 11pm.
Can I import my Settle Up groups?▾
Not automatically yet. The practical migration is to settle existing balances on Settle Up first, then create matching groups on Split The Bill and invite members by email. Most users find this faster than they expect (10-15 min per group) because the OCR removes the per-bill typing friction that made historical data feel important.
Is Split The Bill free?▾
The free tier covers 10 OCR'd bills every 30 days, plus the core features (item-level, multi-currency, group invites, settle-up links, CSV export). Pro is $7/month or $70/year — same comparison territory as Settle Up Premium, but our free plan covers more.
Does it work offline?▾
Currently no — this is the main feature gap vs Settle Up. If your bill-splitting happens on flights, cruises, or in remote areas, Settle Up's offline sync is the better fit. If you're processing bills at home / in cafés / on hotel WiFi, the web-first model is fine.
How does multi-currency work?▾
Bills can be in any currency; balances reconcile when one peer settles in a different currency. SEPA QR codes work for EUR transfers; Revolut + Wise + PayPal handle multi-currency natively. The free tier includes multi-currency — Settle Up paywalls some of this.
Can I cancel Pro anytime?▾
Yes. Pro is month-to-month or annual; cancel takes effect at the end of the current period. No "cancel by phone" friction. Refunds are handled per the public refund policy.
