Terms of Service
Last updated: October 4, 2026
1. Agreement
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Split The Bill website at split-the-bill.app and the associated web application (together, the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
2. Who can use the Service
You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service. By using the Service you confirm that you meet that requirement and that any information you give us is accurate.
3. Accounts
Registration is open — anyone can create an account at any time. There is a Free plan and a paid Pro plan; see Pricing for details. You are responsible for keeping your credentials confidential and for any activity under your account. Tell us right away if you suspect unauthorised access.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Break any applicable law, or infringe anyone else's rights
- Upload content that is illegal, abusive, defamatory, or fraudulent
- Attempt to disrupt or reverse-engineer the Service, or bypass its rate limits or security measures
- Use the Service to send unsolicited commercial messages or harvest personal information about other users
- Resell or redistribute the Service without our written permission
5. Your content
You keep ownership of everything you upload — receipts, bills, splits, names, and notes ("Your Content"). You grant us a limited, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, transmit, and process Your Content solely to operate and improve the Service for you. That licence ends when you delete the content or close your account, except for backups we may keep for a short period as described in our Privacy Policy.
You are responsible for Your Content. Do not upload content you do not have the right to share, and be mindful that a receipt may contain personal data about people who have not consented to use the Service.
6. Sharing links
The Service lets you share a bill or collection via a public link or a private, PIN-protected link — both available on Free and Pro. Free share links expire after 7 days; Pro links never expire. Shared pages are excluded from search engine indexes. You can revoke a link at any time; once revoked, the link stops working for everyone within a short cache window. Anyone you share a link with can view the content of that page for as long as the link is live.
7. Pricing & payment (Pro plan)
Paid plans and their prices are listed on the pricing section of the site. Prices are in US dollars, exclusive of applicable taxes (we will add VAT or sales tax at checkout where required). Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless cancelled. You can cancel at any time from your account — cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not refund the current period unless required by law. See our Refund Policy for details.
Consumers in the EU and UK have a statutory 14-day withdrawal right. If you start using the Service within that window you agree to waive that right for digital content already delivered, as permitted by law.
8. Free plan limits
Free plan limits (such as the monthly cap on the number of bills) are listed on the pricing section of the site. We may adjust those limits with reasonable notice. We will never silently move currently-free features behind a paywall for users who signed up under an earlier plan.
9. Availability, beta features & math disclaimer
We work hard to keep the Service running, but we cannot guarantee it will always be available, error-free, or completely secure. Some features (noted as "beta" in the app) are still in development and may change or be removed.
The Service calculates splits using deterministic code, but the data it works with comes from optical character recognition (OCR), fiscal QR codes, and what you and your group enter. Always review the split before acting on it. The Service is provided for informational and convenience purposes — it is not accounting, legal, or tax advice.
10. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time and delete your account from the profile page. Deletion deactivates your account immediately and permanently deletes it within 7 days; you can request to restore it during that window. We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially break these Terms or if we are required to by law. If we do, we will notify you in advance where that is reasonable.
11. Intellectual property
The Service — including its design, brand, and code — is owned by us and protected by copyright and other laws. These Terms do not transfer any of those rights to you beyond the limited licence to use the Service.
12. Disclaimers & liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) €50. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses.
Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for fraud, death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
13. Changes to the Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do we will change the "Last updated" date and, if the change is material, notify you by email or inside the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. Continued use of the Service after the change means you accept the new Terms.
14. Governing law & disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where Split The Bill is registered (Europe), without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Consumers keep the protection of the mandatory rules of their country of residence. Any dispute will be handled by the competent courts of that jurisdiction, unless consumer protection law requires otherwise.
