Email-to-bill

Forward it. Forget it.

Your Pro account gets a personal forwarding address. Send a receipt or invoice email to it — a subscription charge, a hotel confirmation, a food-delivery order — and it becomes a bill on its own, ready to split. No photo, no re-typing, no app to open first.

📧 Your own forwarding address🔒 Only senders you approve Pro feature — $7/month or $70/year

Email-to-bill is a Pro feature that gives every account a personal forwarding address: forward a receipt or invoice email to it — from a sender you've approved — and Split The Bill turns it into a bill automatically, ready to split, without anyone photographing paper or retyping a total. It is the counterpart to receipt scanning: scanning is for a paper receipt in your hand, email-to-bill is for a receipt that was already digital.

How email-to-bill works

  1. 1

    Get your forwarding address

On Pro, open Settings → Email-to-bill and copy your personal address. It's tied to your account — nobody else can use it to file bills into it.

  2. 2

Approve the senders you'll forward from

Add your own email (and any other inbox you use — work, a partner's, a second personal account) to the trusted-sender list. Only mail that passes as one of these gets turned into a bill; everything else is held, not filed.

  3. 3

    Forward the receipt

Hit forward on the confirmation email — Stripe, a hotel, Uber Eats, a subscription renewal — and send it to your address. Most inboxes let you set up a filter to do this automatically for specific senders.

  4. 4

Review the bill like any other

The app reads the email's attachment or body, extracts the vendor and total, and creates the bill. Open it, check the numbers, and split it exactly the way you would a photographed receipt — Python still does the math, never the AI.

What email-to-bill gets you

  • The receipts that never touched paper

A SaaS invoice, a flight confirmation, a food-delivery order — these arrive as email and nothing else. Email-to-bill is built for exactly that, so you stop screenshotting your inbox to run it back through a photo scanner.

  • A private, unguessable address

Your forwarding address isn't published or predictable. Reaching it at all is the first gate; the trusted-sender allow-list is the second.

  • You decide who can file a bill into your account

Nothing becomes a bill just because it landed in your inbox. Only email from your own account address or a sender you've explicitly approved gets processed — anything else is quarantined, not silently accepted.

  • Handles the receipt in the body or as an attachment

A PDF invoice, a CSV export, an image receipt, or just a well-formatted confirmation email with the total in the body — email-to-bill tries the cheapest, most reliable read first and only escalates when it has to.

Where forwarding beats scanning

  • A shared Netflix or Spotify Family invoice

The renewal email arrives every month with the exact charge. Forward it once you've set up your trusted sender, and the same recurring cost turns into a bill without you finding the receipt or the app.

  • A hotel or flight confirmation for a group trip

Booking confirmations are long, itemized, and always emailed — never printed. Forward the confirmation and split the room or the fare with the group the same day you booked it.

  • A food-delivery order nobody wants to screenshot

Uber Eats, DoorDash, or a local delivery app emails a full receipt with delivery fee and tip broken out. Forwarding it keeps every line intact instead of cropping a phone screenshot.

  • An assistant or partner forwarding bills on your behalf

Add a partner's or assistant's address as a trusted sender, and receipts they receive on your behalf — a business expense, a household bill — can be forwarded straight into your account without you ever seeing the original inbox.

Why forwarding beats another photo

  • No paper to lose

A digital receipt that only exists in your inbox never needed a camera. Forwarding it is the natural action you were already taking to file it away.

  • Works from anywhere you can send an email

No app to open, no camera to line up. If you can forward a message, you can file a bill — from your phone, your laptop, or a filter that does it automatically.

  • Spam-resistant by design

The unguessable address and the trusted-sender allow-list mean a leaked address alone can't be used to spam bills into your account — mail from an unrecognized sender is quarantined, not filed.

  • The same trustworthy math underneath

Whatever the source — a photo, a manual entry, or a forwarded email — the total and the split are computed the same deterministic way. Email-to-bill changes how the receipt gets in, never how it's calculated.

Photographing a receipt vs. forwarding the email

Both get a receipt into the app. Here's when each one is actually the faster path.

Photographing a receipt vs. forwarding the email
A paper receipt in your handYou'd have to email it to yourself first, or type it in manually.Scan it by photo instead — email-to-bill isn't the right tool for paper.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my email-to-bill forwarding address?
It's a Pro feature. Once you're on Pro, go to Settings → Email-to-bill to see your personal address, and add at least one trusted sender before forwarding anything — an email from a sender you haven't approved won't be turned into a bill.
Can anyone spam bills into my account if they get my address?
No. The address itself is unguessable, and on top of that, only email from your own account address or from a sender you've explicitly added to your trusted-sender list gets processed. Anything else is held for review rather than filed automatically.
Is email-to-bill available on the Free plan?
No — forwarding receipts by email is Pro-only ($7/month or $70/year). Free accounts can still add bills manually or by scanning a photo; a forwarded email from a Free account is not processed.
What kinds of emails can I forward?
Anything with a real receipt or invoice in it — a PDF or image attachment, a CSV export, or just a well-formatted confirmation email with a vendor and a total in the body. A newsletter, a plain text update, or an email with no total and no vendor won't produce a bill.
What happens if I forward something that isn't a receipt?
Nothing gets filed — the app looks for a clear total, a currency, and a vendor or line items before it will create a bill, so an email without that signal is simply not turned into one.
Do I need to forward from my own email address?
Not necessarily. Forwarding from your own account email always works. If you want to forward from a different inbox — a work account, a partner's address — add it to your trusted-sender list first (up to 20 addresses), from Settings → Email-to-bill.
