A bill split and tip calculator fits in one formula: (bill + tip) รท number of people. For a 4,800 RSD bill (the example amounts in this article are in Serbian dinars), a 10% tip and four people, each person pays 1,320 RSD.
Splitting a bill with a tip means adding the tip to the amount on the receipt and dividing the total among the people at the table. On the 4,800 RSD bill, that is 4,800 + 480 = 5,280 RSD, and 5,280 รท 4 = 1,320 RSD each. What remains is rounding the share when the total doesn't divide evenly, and multiplying back to check that the shares add up to the bill plus the tip.
Key takeaways
- Calculate the tip once, on the amount from the bill, and only then divide. The order doesn't change the result, only rounding does, so round last.
- For any percentage, multiply the bill by 1 plus the percentage (1.08 for 8%, 1.12 for 12%) and divide by the number of people. Don't calculate the tip separately for each person.
- Check every calculation by multiplying back: share ร number of people must return the bill plus the tip. If you're a few dinars short, add them to the tip.
- If someone ordered considerably more, don't split into equal parts: work out each person's items multiplied by 1 plus the tip percentage.
What is the rule of a bill split and tip calculator in one sentence?
The rule is one formula: (bill + tip) รท number of people. What percentage is normal? No percentage is mandatory, and the decision is up to you and your group.
What does a 4,800 RSD bill split between 4 people with a 10% tip look like?
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Bill from the receipt | read off | 4,800 RSD |
| 2. Tip 10% | 4,800 ร 0.10 | 480 RSD |
| 3. Total to pay | 4,800 + 480 | 5,280 RSD |
| 4. Share per person | 5,280 รท 4 | 1,320 RSD |
In your head: you get 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left.
What if the tip isn't 10%: how much does each person pay?
For the same 4,800 RSD bill and four people, the share changes only with the tip percentage, as the table below shows. The difference between 8% and 12% is 48 RSD per person. Only the percentage in step 2 changes, the other steps stay the same.
| Tip | Tip amount | Total | Per person (รท 4) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 240 RSD | 5,040 RSD | 1,260 RSD |
| 8% | 384 RSD | 5,184 RSD | 1,296 RSD |
| 10% | 480 RSD | 5,280 RSD | 1,320 RSD |
| 12% | 576 RSD | 5,376 RSD | 1,344 RSD |
If your group likes round numbers, round the share up. At 1,350 RSD per person the total is 5,400 RSD, which is a tip of 600 RSD, exactly 12.5% of the bill. At 1,300 RSD it's 5,200 RSD, or 400 RSD in tip, about 8.3%. Before you round, work out the percentage you're actually giving.
Is the tip added before or after splitting, and does it change the amount?
The order doesn't change the amount: 4,800 รท 4 = 1,200, then 1,200 ร 1.10 = 1,320, the same as when you add the tip first and then divide. A difference appears only when the amount isn't evenly divisible, because then you round. Example: a bill of 4,850 RSD, a 10% tip, four people.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Tip 10% | 4,850 ร 0.10 | 485 RSD |
| Total | 4,850 + 485 | 5,335 RSD |
| Share per person | 5,335 รท 4 | 1,333.75 RSD |
| Three people pay | 1,334 | 4,002 RSD |
| One person pays | 1,333 | 1,333 RSD |
| Sum | 4,002 + 1,333 | 5,335 RSD |
Nobody can pay 75 para, so three people give 1,334 and one gives 1,333. If everyone gives 1,340, the total is 5,360 RSD and 25 RSD goes to the tip. That's fair only if you agree beforehand that the extra goes to the server.
How do I check that the shares add up to the right amount?
The check takes three calculations: share ร number of people must equal the bill plus the tip. If it doesn't, you made a mistake somewhere in the multiplication or rounded the wrong way.
- Multiply the share by the number of people: 1,320 ร 4 = 5,280 RSD.
- Subtract the bill: 5,280 โ 4,800 = 480 RSD.
- Divide the remainder by the bill: 480 รท 4,800 = 0.10, or 10%.
If you don't get the percentage you wanted in the third step, look at the deviation. A few dinars is rounding and is acceptable. If the difference is tens or hundreds of dinars, repeat step 2, because the tip was probably calculated from the wrong amount.
When is an equal split not fair, and what then?
An equal split stops being fair when one person spent about twice as much as the others, for example they had a main course and wine while the others had only a salad and water. In that case the tip is divided proportionally: share = the person's items ร (1 + percentage).
Example on the same 4,800 RSD bill: three people spent 1,000 RSD each, and the fourth person 1,800 RSD. The tip is still 10%.
| Person | Items | Calculation | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| A, B, C (each) | 1,000 RSD | 1,000 ร 1.10 | 1,100 RSD |
| D | 1,800 RSD | 1,800 ร 1.10 | 1,980 RSD |
| Sum | 4,800 RSD | 3 ร 1,100 + 1,980 | 5,280 RSD |
With an equal split, D would pay 1,320 RSD, so 660 less than they spent, and the other three would pay 220 more each. Doing this by hand takes a while, so it's worth using receipt scanning and expense splitting: you photograph the receipt or scan its QR code if it has one, each item goes to whoever ordered it, and the tip is spread proportionally. The math is deterministic, with no AI estimation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the tip calculated on the whole bill or only on the food?
There's no rule: the tip can be calculated on the total amount from the bill or only on the food, so agree before you work it out.
Can the tip be paid by card?
It depends on the venue and the terminal, so ask the server before paying. If it can't, have cash ready and work out the amount per person in advance.
How do I collect the shares if one person paid the whole bill?
The person who paid should send each person the exact amount of their share. A friend who doesn't want to install a new app can open bill splitting without installing anything through a regular link. The payer doesn't have to chase anyone, and the others see their amount without registering.
How do I split the next bill before the server arrives?
Next time, enter the tip percentage and the number of people in Split The Bill before the server brings the check.
